Finishing and Altering Workshop with Curry Wilkinson

In this workshop students will observe and practice altering wheel thrown vessels such as platters, vases, and bowls with local artist Curry Wilkinson. This workshop is a great way to take wheel thrown pottery to the next level and add movement and uniqueness to wheel thrown pots. This class will cover techniques like undulating rims, surface decoration with slip trailing, darting, and much more. This workshop is recommended to potter's who have at least a few months of throwing experience to get the most out of the workshop.

About Curry:

Curry began making pottery at a young age, but only recently learned that he could in fact make a career in it. In 2014 he began an apprenticeship with Joseph Sand in Randleman, NC and worked there until 2017 creating a solid foundation on which to continue his pottery career. Curry learned to fire a wood kiln with many potters including Joseph Sand, Mark Hewitt, and Daniel Johnston. Curry was able to take that knowledge and turn it into his own style and build a wood fired kiln with a lot of hard work and the help of supporters and the Regional Artist Project Grant. For Curry, being able to turn the creamy, pliable clay, so abundant in his home state, into functional art is truly a privilege. Curry and his wife Sarah own and operate Curry Wilkinson Pottery located in Burlington, NC. Our kiln was built with support of the North Carolina Arts Council and the partnering arts councils of the Regional Artist Project Grant Program.

Students can use up to 15 pounds of clay during the workshop if they plan to fire wares at our studio. Bringing already thrown leather hard pots for altering is welcome. Students firing elsewhere may bring their own clay if they plan on taking home their wares at the end of the workshop. Workshop Students are welcome to fire wares with our studio clays and come back to glaze them after the workshop. Glazing hours will happen on a following Saturday 12:30pm-6pm. We use star red and white clays and fire to cone 6.

If firing at our studio we ask that pots not exceed 20" in one direction due to kiln space.

We'll serve some snacks and light refreshments. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle.

Please Note A Few Rules of Our Studio Rules:

  • Cleaning up after yourself is expected.
